The "Vienna" is an outstanding example of clockmakers' art, manufactured by skilled craftsmen in London.
The Vienna is a rare example of a floor standing regulator with the style of the Biedermeier period, circa 1880
Kaiser Frederich III established the oldest Guild of Clockmakers in Vienna in 1451. The Charter and Royal Patronage provided the stimulus that over the centuries established Vienna as the leading center for clockmaking in Europe.
The Biedermeier period in the 19th century gave rise to a unity of art forms, including clocks and quality of workmanship that are still appreciated today.
The walnut case features book-matched burl and figured veneers inlaid with satinwood edgeline. The bevelled edge of the door is decorated with cross-band satinwood veneer and carved capitals. The Palladian style pediment features hand carved decoration. The base has a large drawer and turned bun feet.
